Chasing Dopamine: Why the Here and Now Never Feels Like Enough (Part 1)

Ever find yourself restless, even when things are going well? That gnawing feeling like what you have right now just isn’t quite enough? Like there’s always something better, shinier, or more exciting just out of reach? That’s not just your imagination. It’s your biology at work!

Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman explains this beautifully: our brains are wired to chase dopamine, the neurotransmitter that fuels our desire for rewards. But here’s the catch, dopamine isn’t about enjoying what we already have. It’s about what’s next.

Think of dopamine as the brain’s “future-seeking” chemical. It drives us to pursue goals, achieve milestones, and imagine bigger dreams. It’s what keeps us moving forward. But it’s also why we can feel perpetually unfulfilled. As soon as we reach the finish line, our brains shift the goalpost, focusing on the next challenge or opportunity.

Here’s the twist: dopamine thrives in anticipation, not in satisfaction. That’s why the rush of planning a vacation might feel more exciting than the vacation itself. It’s why the promise of a promotion or a new relationship can light you up, but once you’re there, the shine fades faster than you expected.

So, how do we break the cycle?

1. Practice Gratitude in the Present
While dopamine pulls us toward the future, fulfillment lives in the present. Pause. Look around. Take stock of what you’ve already built, what you’ve already accomplished. Gratitude isn’t just a mindset; it’s a way of anchoring yourself in what is, rather than what could be.

2. Balance the Chase with Contentment
It’s okay to want more, to dream big, and to set ambitious goals. But don’t let the chase for the “next thing” rob you of the joy in today. Achievement feels hollow without appreciation.

3. Acknowledge the Science

Understanding that your brain is wired this way can be freeing. You’re not broken; you’re human. Awareness of the dopamine cycle allows you to catch yourself when you’re slipping into that endless pursuit of “what’s next” and remind yourself to slow down.

Here’s the truth: the next thing won’t complete you. It might excite you for a while, but true fulfillment comes from finding peace in the here and now, while still holding space for your dreams.

Hi, I’m Frankie. I’ve loved writing since I was a child, not just the stories, but the way words can carry emotion, truth, and understanding. I’m curious about people, life, and the deeper meaning beneath the surface. This blog is where I reflect, create, and try to capture what it means to be fully human. Thanks for being here. Let’s grow together.
